AMRI duo undergo handwriting test

Arrested AMRI employees Preeta Banerjee and Sanjib Pal underwent a handwriting test in front of a judicial magistrate at Alipore court on Tuesday afternoon, following a plea by the investigators on Monday.

Vice-president (administration) Banerjee was brought from Alipore women’s jail and general manager (maintenance) Pal from Alipore Central jail and produced before the court of the second judicial magistrate, Suparna Roy, around 3.45pm following an order by the chief judicial magistrate, C.H. Karim, earlier in the day.

The duo and 11 others were held in connection with the December 9 fire at the hospital in Dhakuria that led to 91 deaths. While Pal was arrested on December 27 last year, Banerjee was arrested on January 23.

“The magistrate asked the duo to write a few lines on a blank sheet of paper. The two were also asked to sign on a piece of paper in the presence of a handwriting expert. They were taken back to their respective jails after the test,” said defence lawyer Salim Rahman.

State counsel had prayed for the test on Monday. Stressing its need, police said they had collected a number of documents that had what appeared to be Banerjee and Pal’s handwritings and signatures but both had denied any link with the papers.

“We have found the signatures and notes by the two on a number of documents that we have seized during our investigation. However, they have been repeatedly claiming that they had not written on or signed those documents. Hence we prayed to the court to intervene and get the test done,” said an investigator.

“We may also need to conduct a similar handwriting check for doctor Pronab Dasgupta and the hospital’s night administrator Sajid Hossain, who are currently lodged in Alipore Central jail,” added the police officer.
